Adult Library Card Policy
Library cards are issued free of charge to Naugatuck residents. To obtain a library card, adults need proof of Naugatuck residency and identification. ID may be in the form of a Connecticut driver’s license or other official state or federal ID. If your ID has your Naugatuck address on it, it can serve as both your ID and proof of address. If your ID does not have your Naugatuck address on it, you must also provide the library with a piece of mail addressed to you at your Naugatuck address. If you do not receive mail often, the library can send you a postcard which you can bring back to the library once it has reached you in the mail.
Borrowers are responsible for all materials checked out on their card – lost and stolen cards should be reported immediately as you may be held liable for materials that were checked out with your lost card without your knowledge.
Children’s Library Card Policy
All children below ninth grade must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to the Youth Services Department in order to be issued a children’s library card. The parent or guardian must have proof of Naugatuck residency and the child must also reside in Naugatuck. The adult is responsible for all material charged out on the child’s card. Children’s library cards cannot be used to access the library’s computers, check out DVDs, or check out museum passes. Parents can use their own adult library card to check out materials in the Youth Services Department, so you do not necessarily need a children’s library card to check out materials for your child.
Young Adult Library Card Policy
Once in high school, young adults must apply for their card in the Youth Services Department. Young adults must provide at least one form of identification. Any of the following are acceptable forms of ID for a YA card:
– School ID from the current school year (or the previous school year if the new school year hasn’t started yet)
– Driver’s license
– Learner’s permit
– Birth certificate
– Social security card
The young adult must also have proof of a Naugatuck address such as a report card, a piece of mail addressed to the young adult, or the address on their learner’s permit or driver’s license. Mail addressed to “the parents or guardians of” the young adult is not acceptable. If you are a young adult and you do not have proof of address and you do not receive mail often, the library can send you a postcard in the mail which you can later bring back to the library to use as proof of address.
Young adult library cards can be used like adult library cards to check out any and all circulating library materials, and log on to the library’s computers. Please inquire in the Youth Services Department for more information.
Patrons from other Connecticut Libraries
Out-of-town borrowers are welcome to check out material from The Howard Whittemore Memorial Library. Patrons must have a current library card from their hometown library in Connecticut in order to borrow material.
